Macular Degeneration is a condition that causes loss of central vision. Central vision is what your eyes use when you look straight ahead.
This condition affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp and detailed vision. It does not affect side (peripheral) vision.
Early diagnosis plays a key role in preserving vision.
Most common type
Progresses slowly
Caused by protein deposits damaging the macula
Gradual vision loss
More serious form
Caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the macula
Vision loss may occur rapidly
